Last night Malygos finally decided he had a helm lying around for me. Hooray to that. :) I think I am about as ready as Ulduar as I am going to be. I’ve got a Spirit Wolf if MM or Survival happens to be rockin’ with the new Furious Howl. I’ve got a Spirit Beast if Beast Mastery is top again. I’ve stock-piled enough herbs for flasks to last a while.
Although I have been tempted to make the switch to Jewewlcrafting. I personally haven’t been happy with the benefits I’ve gotten from Alchemy since Lich King hit. Fel Mana Potions were fantastic for Hunters raiding during BC. But with the potion limits and what not, sure I save some gold on flasks, but /shrug at that.
I really want to know what’s in the Alchemist only chests that are tucked away in Ulduar. Being crazy and dropping Herbalism and being Alchemy/Jewewlcrafting is another crazy idea. Front the money to level JC and then get the benefits from both professions.
Tempting tempting.
Anyone else end up dropping a profession to pick up the powerhouse of Jewewlcrafting for maximizing their stats? Thoughts, opinions, etc. Share ‘em!
I did exactly that Dro, dropped Herbalism in favor of Jewelcrafting. My two main reasons were that one flasks took a sharp decline in price on Baelgun’s AH as well as stacks of herbs. The other reason was to try and stay as competitive as possible with a DK we have in guild. So far it has proven to be both profitable and convenient, no more relying on someone else to cut a gem or buy it off AH. It only took me a day to power level it to 450 and cost about 1.5k in gold. I did get some help from other JC’s in my guild whom had spare crafting items. Worth it imo but I don’t know what prices maybe like on other servers. You’ll make the money you unload to do it back in under two weeks. I almost dropped Alchemy for Blacksmithing but I can’t seem to let go of 4 hour flasks. I say go for it!
I dropped skinning for engineering to save money on buying ammo and being convinced that what ever happens to ammo 3.1 was going to involve engineers.
I think now I was rash in making that decision although I could take my +4crit on boots over icewalker and continue farming elemental clouds for gold.
My DK is a miner/herber I have a guilde that skins enough to keep me supplied.
Thanks for the link, Dro :-)
I’ve thought about dropping profs before, for money reasons. I’m fairly certain, given my limited playtime, that starting from scratch on my main for a DPS increase somewhere would NOT be the best use of my time.
The DK is getting levelled for mining/skinning for mo’ money…. but other than that, I couldn’t bear to drop all the hard work leveling Herb/alch i’ve put in.
:-)

I dropped Skinning for JCing a little while ago, partly for the lovely gems but also because I find JCing to be the most fun profession I’ve had yet. (I’ve gone through Mining, Herbing, LWing, Skinning and Engineering to 205 to get the Bombling.) At the moment I’m LW/JC with a 77 alt supplying saronite to fuel my prospecting addiction.
When 3.1 hits I am going to be dropping LWing to level engineering again to get Lil’ Smokey (because I am crazy about mini pets. really.) and the two mounts, then I’m thinking of leveling tailoring to get those two mounts (I am getting relatively close to the 100 mounts achievement. >_> ) before switching to BSing for raiding. I’m a bit sick of LWing so I think taking BSing might be a nice change of pace. (As well as it showing as more DPS in the spreadsheet as SV and I want to stay SV)
Man you guys are really making me think I should go blow the gold and do it. So tempting . . .
I recently dropped LW and power lvld JC. Worth it in my opinion. Besides the sweet BoP gems, you can do the daily and buy a Dragon Eye with the token you get. They sell for 120 to 150 gold on my server. It’s pretty nice to be able to do 1 daily and get over 100 gold for it.
I dropped Tailoring and picked up JC, I have to say that power leveling JC was a pita. I’d suggest before picking up JC spend a bit of time trolling the AH for your leveling items. I know it was hard to get them on my server (Doomhammer), I don’t mind spending the gold but a lot of the things I needed weren’t even on the AH at the time. For some I spent an outrageous amount because they were the only ones listed. I have no regrets in dropping tailoring for JC, it hasn’t been a big money maker but its saved me money being able to prospect for my own gems and cut them myself.
I have actually been really tempted to do that lately for the gems… (drop herb and go alch/JC). Mostly because if I could pack more hit into my hit gems, it would be a lifesaver for me. On the other hand, herbing is mostly what is fueling my income at the moment, I’m super broke for some reason >.>

I have been thinking of dropping Skinning for JC, Skin doesn’t really bring in that much money. My other prof is Herb and although lately the prices have dropped. @Pike we had a huge price increase when inscriptions came available driving herbs to crazy prices and I made tons of gold. But lately on my server Herb prices are pretty low, so my supply has slowed although so has my expenses being as I only have a few pieces left for BiS (i.e. costs for enchants and gems). I have been reading on JC and the money with dailies and procs it is a huge money maker from my research. But I like the crit from Skin and never buying flasks or pots is nice with free herbs.
I am still on the fence and can’t decide.
I decided to spend about 1k gold last night and bought almost everything I need to go straight t 450. I’m not going to make the switch until I have everything, but a switch I am making indeed.
Yeah, I moved mining to an alt I finally levelled up, and used the minerals he got while levelling mining to PL jewelcrafting. I’m only sitting at 410 JC, but I can cut delicate dragon’s eye, which is as far as I care to do.
Only cost me about 200g to pick up random ends that my mining alt didn’t grab.
Drot, you dont have to go to 450 to take advantage of the prismatics, it’s only 375 iirc.
The BIGGEST advantage that JC brings to the table includes the massive stat prismatics but also in the ability to obtain set bonuses you wouldn’t normally have been able to get. Considering BiS gear with one +hit gem you can get all but one socket bonus. Also, the proof is in the pudding, I have 1585 agility and cracked 40% crit unbuffed and still dont have JE(but i do have BiS DW combo so bleh.) Anyways, what I am getting at, is a lot of people tend to diminish its worth saying “well if they dont release epic gems for JC then it wont be worth as much when everyone else epic gems”. While this is true we still get more gem flexibility and therefore better flex when taking into consideration full BiS potential.
Also, the daily is a complete joke and is still worth ~100g per day on Illidan, 20g + 80 for the dragons eye if you don’t need it.
I’m waiting to drop my mining / engineer combo before I go JC / BS. I’m still holding out with the hope that they will make it worthwhile in endgame.
That and because I don’t have the gold to burn right now. >.>
I’m a Leatherworker and Enchanter currently. I couldn’t bear to drop either though currently since both give me bonuses to my gear and the fact that I have some pretty rare LW recipes that aren’t too common anymore. The thought has crossed my mind though…
Well, about 3000g later I now have 27 Agility gems in my gear. Rock on. :)
BIG DOG!
I dropped Eng for JC about a week ago and am glad I did, as it proved to be an almost immediate benefit to my DPS. Being able to pop those +27 Agil babies into my blue and green slots was more than worth the 2500 or so I spent powerleveling.
OK you guys are making a good case for me but what about a list of mats for JC lvling, or what website did you use to gather mats?
http://www.google.com, click in search box, type “Powerleveling Jewel Crafting”, press Enter. Select first page found, profit.
I ended up not going entirely by any of the guides simply because I was able to bum a lot of random stuff off of guildies allowing me to make more of something else in certain situations but its a good start.
I did the same. I replaced some of the items on the powerleveling guides due to certain prices being lower than others for certain materials.

The JC only gems are definitely worth the money you spend to level up. Not only are the +27 stat gems far superior to the blue quality gems but they are better than the epic ones that aren’t released yet. If that werent enough of a reason to level JC you also have to take into consideration the fact that they are prismatic. Not having to equip a blue gem or whatever color happens to be bad for you just so you can activate a meta is invaluable.
hm….i like alchi, got alchi/enc and wont drop alchi i am still hoping for epic gems which make jc less good.
Thanks for your wonderful blog. I have learned alot from it. I sent you an email a couple monthes ago on how to add the bubble text to my blog, and it worked 8) Told me to drop you a line when it is up and so it is. Leave me a comment let me know what yah think thanks Dro
