As I patiently bide my time because I haven’t been able to play WoW for a few days, a couple people asked what parts I picked up for my new rig. So in an effort to fill a void I figure I would post ‘em. One thing I like about Newegg is when you add something to your cart it has a list of items that you can get as well as either a combo or just at a discount. Carefully picking components ends up saving a whole lotta money. So straight from their Newegg description pages:
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 2.8GHz – 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core black edition Processor
- EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX(G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
- CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
- Rosewill RX750-S-B 750W ATX12V v2.2 EPS12V v2.91
- GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-DS4H AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
- Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
- ASUS VW222U Black 22″ 2ms(GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP support 300 cd/m2 1000:1
- Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
All in all, the total came to less than 930 dollars before shipping. Most of the stuff I was able to get much lower than what is listed on each of the pages. I was really happy with the size and quality of the monitor I was able to pick up, as well as the high-quality case, which I ended up paying $90 cheaper than it’s retail cost. The video card was barely a step down than what I was originally looking at, but considering I bought the whole new machines we tried to save some pennies here and there.
I do think I am going to swallow the pill and make the jump to Vista.I am going to yank on of my other hard drives out of my old machine that holds all of my documents and personal files. I am going to use the new one for installation of the OS and programs, but then set aside a partition of about 150 gigs or so and use it as a back-up for my important documents. That way if the new drive fails, all my documents are still intact, but if my document drive fails, at least I have it backed-up on a separate hard drive. I do think I am going to swallow the pill and make the jump to Vista. I was soooo hesitant to make the switch from 2k to XP back in the day because my computer ran like a rock. But the change to XP has been good as long as I didn’t let Windows do it’s own updating until I specifically wanted it to. And I really want the ability for all my memory to be allocated and recognized.
UPS tells me everything is on its way. Faster dang you!
I did the editing for the podcast last night. Today I need to take some time to listen through the whole thing and make sure I got rid of any microphone cracks or pops as well as eliminating any background noise. Then I need to go check out how to get this bad boy listed up on iTunes.
Thoughts, opinions, yadda yadda. Post! :)
